This flagship of Montreal’s aerospace industry, which specializes in manufacturing landing gear, has invested over $11 million, $1.1 million of which is from the financial support provided by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.

This major investment has enabled the company to purchase new production equipment and double the facilities at its factory in Anjou. The new facilities will be for addressing the company’s expansion requirements, especially after signing its major contract with the Brazilian firm Embraer/ELEB Aerospace.

Guillermo Alonso Jr.: beyond Alta Precision Inc.

In addition to running the family business, Mr. Alonso is greatly involved in developing the Quebec aeronautics industry. He was president of the Quebec Aerospace Association (AQA) in the late 2000s. Then, following AQA’s merger with Aéro Montréal in 2012, he served as a member and chair of the Executive Board of this prestigious association. He also served as a member and chair of the Markets Development – SMEs Working Group.

Mr. Alonso Jr. is also involved in Aéro Montréal’s MACH Initiative, a supplier development program aimed at optimizing the Quebec aerospace supply chain.

Aéro Montréal, Quebec’s aerospace cluster, is a strategic think tank that groups all the major decision makers in Quebec’s aerospace sector, including companies, educational and research institutions, associations and unions.

In July 2014, at the Farnborough International Airshow in London, Alta Precision’s president, Guillermo Alonso Jr., announced that, further to a worldwide call for tenders, he had just signed a nearly 20-year contract with Embraer. Through this contract, Alta Precision will develop and manufacture key landing gear components for the new version of the Brazilian manufacturer’s regional twin-engine jet.

This new contract comes in the wake of the contract signed in 2011 with Swiss aeronautics equipment manufacturer Liebherr-Aerospace, which manufactures the landing gear for Bombardier’s new CSeries.

Mr. Alonso is very proud of these two contracts, which he says “are aligned with Alta Precision’s complete commitment on research and development, safety and quality. This is the result of strategic decisions taken several years ago to focus on becoming a world leader in the manufacturing of landing gear systems. I am very proud of what we have accomplished so far and what is yet to come.” [Translation]

Family enthusiasm

Mr. Alonso and his family have come a long way in developing their company, which now employs over a hundred people. It was in 1979 that Guillermo Alonso Sr., a Spanish immigrant who had arrived in Montréal in the 1950s, decided to start a company that specializes in manufacturing precision parts.

By 1993, the company was already innovating. It was the dawn of the 3D-printer era and, with assistance from Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, the company purchased the first stereographic/lithographic equipment in Quebec.

In 1999, Mr. Alonso Jr. and his sister Sonia took over and initiated two major transformations. First, they decided to further specialize in manufacturing complex parts for landing gear in order to become the best in the field. Then, they diversified their client base and partnered with major industry players to boost their sales abroad. Their clients now include Boeing, Bombardier, Airbus, Embraer, Héroux-Devtek and the US Air Force, and 95% of their sales are for export.

Today, Alta Precision continues to develop and expand. It is recognized as a world-class manufacturer of landing gear components and is a preferred supplier for manufacturers and builders in the aeronautics industry.

That is something the Alonso family can be proud of!
