Industry Day: Fruitful meeting between Babcock Canada and Quebec SMEs

On November 5, 2019, defence multinational Babcock Canada was able to speak in Montreal with Quebec businesses during an Industry Day organized by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED).

Potential partnerships

The economic spinoffs could be substantial for the aerospace industry and related sectors. Babcock Canada is a prequalified supplier preparing to submit a proposal under the Future Aircrew Training Program. This important National Defence procurement program aims to meet pilot and aircrew (air combat systems officers and airborne electronic sensor operators) training needs.


This contract worth $4 to $6 billion provides for the training of close to 200 professionals per year over a period of 20 to 25 years starting in 2021 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Southport, Manitoba. This call for bids covers all needs related to the project, such as the purchase and maintenance of aircraft, content development and delivery of training to future pilots and aircrew, as well as the construction and maintenance of necessary infrastructure. Many partnership opportunities are thus available to Canadian SMEs.



An important contractor

Over 26 Quebec businesses and institutions participated in the event. They had the opportunity to learn more about Babcock’s global activities and to present their capabilities and target business opportunities with the multinational’s officials.

"This activity is a key moment for Babcock, because we want to strengthen our partnerships with Canadian businesses to support their growth and to continue to obtain contracts in Canada,"

explains Jennifer Leng, Head, ITB and Indigenous Peoples Engagement at Babcock Canada.

In Canada, Babcock is present in particular in the naval and aviation industries, as well as nuclear engineering. The company is considering holding a similar activity next year.

Making the connection between contractors and businesses

Industry Days aim to bring Quebec SMEs and prime contractors together when these contractors are seeking suppliers to meet their contract obligations with the Government of Canada.

These contract obligations are outlined in the Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy. Under this policy, contractors who conclude defence procurement contracts are required to conduct business in Canada equalling the value of the contract.
